Prepreg “Dry” Carbon vs Wet-Layup Carbon: What Changes?

Carbon fibre describes the reinforcement, not the whole manufacturing process. In aftermarket car parts, “dry carbon” often refers to prepreg: fibre supplied with a controlled amount of resin already impregnated into it. In wet layup, dry fabric is placed in a mould and liquid resin is added during fabrication. Both become a cured composite part; “dry” does not mean the finished part contains no resin.

The manufacturing difference

Prepreg can give the maker tighter control over fibre-to-resin ratio, repeatability and weight when it is stored, laid up and cured correctly. It may be cured in an autoclave or by a suitable out-of-autoclave process; an autoclave is not the only legitimate prepreg method. Toray lists several composite manufacturing processes for its materials.

Wet layup is a broader, often less equipment-intensive method. The outcome depends heavily on resin choice, the number and orientation of layers, air removal, mould quality and curing. A carefully built wet-layup part can be excellent; a poorly made prepreg part can still have defects. Neither label alone tells you the finished part’s fit or durability.

What “carbon fibre” might mean in a listing

An exterior part can be full carbon composite, or it can use a visible carbon skin over another substrate. Those constructions have different weight, stiffness, repair and cost implications. A glossy weave in a photo does not identify which construction was used. Ask the seller whether the part is full carbon or carbon-overlay, what the underlying substrate is, and how the part is finished.

Which should you buy?

For a small styling piece, the exact construction may matter less than correct fitment, a consistent finish and a suitable protective coating. For a large or load-bearing component, ask for the construction specification and installation requirements rather than inferring strength from the word “prepreg.” Neither construction is automatically road-legal for every use, and neither guarantees a direct fit.
