BMW E90 Pre-LCI vs LCI: How to Choose the Right Part

“LCI” is BMW’s facelift designation. For the E90 3 Series sedan in Canada, the major exterior refresh arrived with the 2009 model year. BMW described revised front and rear styling for the sedan and Touring, while the coupe and convertible did not receive that same exterior update at the same time (BMW Canada). A pre-LCI E90 front grille or bumper is not a direct replacement for its LCI counterpart.

What changed on the E90 sedan

• Hood, kidney grilles and front bumper: The facelift front end has a different visual arrangement. You cannot simply install the later kidney grilles into the earlier hood-and-bumper arrangement. Owners doing a proper LCI conversion pair the hood, grille and bumper; an E90 conversion discussion documents that combination and notes possible fender-gap work.
• Front lip: A pre-LCI lip follows the pre-LCI bumper, while an LCI lip follows the LCI bumper. A standard, M Sport/M-Tech and M3-style bumper each needs the lip specified for that bumper.
• Rear end: BMW revised the rear apron and tail-lamp design. Rear diffusers depend on the bumper shape and exhaust cutouts; do not buy one on the strength of “E90” alone.
• Headlights: The pre-LCI and LCI lights look different, but do not say their outer housings are universally incompatible. E90 owners report that the headlights have the same external dimensions and can be exchanged in some conversions. Verify electrical/lighting configuration for the exact swap. Different appearance is not the same as different physical fit.

Do not confuse E90 with E92

E90 is the sedan; E92 is the coupe. Their doors, fenders, rear bumpers and trunk shapes are not direct substitutes. But the M3 front-lip exception is real: manufacturers sell specific front lips for the factory E90 M3, E92 M3 and E93 M3 front bumper. Status Gruppe’s E9X M3 lip explicitly lists all three, as do multiple products in this E9X M3 lip catalogue. This does not make an E92 M3 lip fit a non-M E90 bumper or every aftermarket M3-style bumper.

For an M3 lip, match the exact M3 or M3-style bumper named by the particular product, then dry-fit before drilling or bonding.
